The Land Purchase

Recently, the membership of St. John's voted to purchase 3.8 acres of land in Sayville. While some options were presented in regards to what we should do with the land, nothing has been decided as of yet. What do you think we should do with the land?

  1. At the very least I think we should hold on to the land as long as possible for the future consideration of our congregation. In the meantime I think we should continue paying for it and develop a use for it that would enhance, support, and nurture our community. I'm thinking a community garden of some sort would be an awesome idea!

  2. A couple of us discussed this idea. My understanding is, it is a way to use the land for ministry, and taxes would not become an issue if it were not otherwise active in a ministry. It is already agricultural land. There are so many potential benefits. It could be a learning lab for the Pre-school. Fresh produce could be grown for the Social Care Ministries for people in need. We could even grow our own flowers for the alter! It would be another opportunity for fellowship, working together, while experiencing the many object lessons Jesus gave us from agriculture. It could be a place for the youth who need a place to do community service hours. Gardening provides a venue for both physical and spiritual exercise; in today's world, it is frequently difficult to stop and be quiet and pray and listen to God. When working in a garden tending a small piece of God's creation, prayer and meditation proceed naturally, for you find yourself on your knees a lot! Maybe some produce could be sold at the farmers' market to help pay for the land purchase.
